Passengers who fail to use headphones can now be banned by United Airlines

The airlines has updated its contracted of carriage with a clause asserting the right to refuse transport to passengers who refuse to use headphones

First reported by CBS News, United Airlines made a change to its contract of carriage last month, expanding the reasons it may refuse transport to potential passengers. CBS News points out that United is currently the first and only major U.S. airlines to have such a policy.

Noisy passengers must have been a recent thorn in the airline’s side, as its policy now states “passengers who fail to use headphones while listening to audio or video content” may be prohibited from flying, and are eligible for a permanent ban.

United commented on the recent change when asked by USA TODAY, stating “With the expansion of Starlink, it seemed like a good time to make that even clearer by adding it to the contract of carriage.” The airline also mentioned that its requirements for Wi-Fi usage have already encouraged flyers to use headphones.
