Sony and TCL finalize TV and AV venture company deal

The $650 million deal gives TCL 51% ownership of Sony's TV and AV division

Sony and TCL have confirmed the completion of the deal that was announced in January. In the agreement, TCL will pay approximately $650 million to take a 51% majority ownership of Sony’s TV and AV businesses.

“Sony Corporation and TCL Electronics Holdings Limited today announced that Sony and TCL have entered into legally binding definitive agreements for a strategic partnership in the home entertainment field,” reads the announcement by Sony and TCL. “This follows the memorandum of understanding announced on January 20, 2026.”

A new, yet-to-be-named global venture company will be created to handle development, manufacturing, and sale of home entertainment and AV products. The products will continue to be sold under the Sony and Bravia names, will TCL providing components.

Sony made waves this week by announcing it will be handing over its TV and home audio division to TCL. According to Sony, it is spinning off its business by giving TCL 51% ownership, while retaining the remaining 49%.

“The joint venture will operate globally, handling the full process from product development and design to manufacturing, sales, logistics, and customer service for products including televisions and home audio equipment,” announced Sony.

TCL, which supplies Sony with its LCD panels, will continue using Sony and Bravia branding going forward. While a memorandum of understanding has been signed by both companies, the deal is expected to close by the end of March. Once the deal is finalized, the new company is planned to begin operations in April of next year.

“We believe that this strategic partnership with Sony represents a unique opportunity to combine the strengths of Sony and TCL, creating a powerful platform for sustainable growth. Through strategic business complementarity, technology and know-how sharing, and operational integration, we expect to elevate our brand value, achieve greater scale, and optimize the supply chain in order to deliver superior products and services to our customers,” said DU Juan, Chairperson, TCL Electronics Holdings Limited.
