Sony Mocopi motion tracking system coming to North America

MoCap goes mobile

Previously only available overseas, Sony has now announced that its Mocopi motion-tracking system is coming to North America. The system, comprised of a series of small, lightweight sensors that strap to the user’s head, wrists, hip, and ankles, feed data to a proprietary app to control a digital avatar in real time. The system is wireless, taking advantage of Bluetooth for data transfer, with the sensors charging in a single case via USB-C.

Mocopi ships with an assortment of premade avatars, although it is of course compatible with any other avatar available. While available for use with VR consumer applications, the software development kit has been made available to 3d software suites for developer usage in games and film. Its low profile and cost compared to other motion tracking systems positions Mocopi for features with smaller budgets than those backed by a major studio.  Mocopi is currently available for preorder at $449, with shipping slated to begin July 14.
