Sony to cease production of Blu-ray recorders

Sony remains one of the few companies to produce Blu-ray players

After announcing a large downsizing of its optical media division last year and recently confirming it would stop manufacturing recordable discs, Sony has revealed that it is now pulling out of the recordable Blu-ray market altogether. The company announced it will end the production and sale of all Blu-ray recording devices.

“After February 2026, we will end the shipment of all Blu-ray disc recorder models sequentially,” announced Sony Japan (machine translated by FlatPanelsHD). “In addition, there is no successor model. We would like to express my heartfelt thanks for the many customers who have used it so far.”

According to Sony’s announcement, most of its Blu-ray recording devices are now discontinued, with the few remaining to be phased out after this month. Along with Panasonic, Sony remains one of the only companies that still manufactures Blu-ray players. Several of Sony’s competitors, including Samsung and LG, have already pulled out of the market entirely.
