Vizio has agreed to pay $3 million to settle a six year old class-action lawsuit that accused the company of misrepresenting the specifications of its LCD TVs.
The lawsuit, filed in 2018, points out Vizio’s claim that their LCD TVs have an “effective” refresh rate of 120Hz or 240Hz, depending on the model. It turns out that Vizio was actually referencing the apparent refresh rate that the TVs seem to operate at (though they do not, in reality) by taking advantage of backlight scanning. As such, the claimed numbers are actually double the TVs’ actual refresh rates.
The lawsuit reads, in part:
“Vizio knows, or at the very least should know, that its television with 60Hz display panels have a refresh rate of 60 images per second and that backlight manipulation methods cannot and do not increase the effective Hz (refresh rate) of a television.”

Vizio maintains that they have not done anything wrong, but has agreed to settle the lawsuit at the sum total of $3 million. Additionally, Vizio has agreed to end the claims that got them in hot water, as well as offer a limited one-year warranty to customers.
