WATCH: High-schooler creates ‘transflective’ portable display

Unique display type allows for clear picture in direct sunlight, all while using less power

A new portable display is about to hit the market that looks to create a unique solution to the problems natural light can present. The Eazeye monitor, designed by high-schooler Louis Huang, did so great during crowdfunding that it was able to get several upgrades before its market debut as the Eazeye Radiant.

Described as the first portable monitor to utilize transflective LCD (TLCD) technology, the Eazeye Radiant can run backlit like a traditional monitor, or front-lit with natural lighting to produce a clear image. This solves the problem of traditional displays becoming washed-out or unviewable in bright sunlight, as well as saving on power. Eazeye says that the Radiant uses 70% less electricity in direct sunlight that a traditional backlit monitor.

The Eazeye Radiant features a 15.6-inch, 60fps full-HD touchscreen display with a refresh rate of 60Hz. Connectivity options include two USB-C ports as well as a mini-HDMI port. Sign ups are currently taking place for preorders on the Eazeye website.
