PC owners will no longer be left out when it comes to access to AI-powered photo editing tools, as Microsoft has announced Generative Erase, its newest feature for the Windows Photos app.
Built on the Spot Fix tool already present in the Photos app, Generative Erase makes it quick and easy to selectively erase an item from a photo without disturbing the rest of the image. According to Microsoft, “compared to Spot fix, Generative erase creates a more seamless and realistic result after objects are erased from the photo, even when erasing large areas.”

This type of feature has been popularized by Apple, Google, and Samsung, and Microsoft is catching up by integrating it into Windows 11 for Arm64 devices. Additionally, the entire suite of Photos app AI edit features, including including Blur background, Remove and Replace background, will be coming to Windows 10 as well.
For now, the feature is only available to Windows Insiders, but a wider release is expected soon. “This update is beginning to roll out to Windows Insiders in all channels today (including Windows Insiders on Windows 10 in the Release Preview Channel),” says Microsoft. “Make sure to update your app to version number 2024.11020.21001.0 or higher.
