Zoom’s Intelligent Director uses AI to ensure everyone is seen

New feature supports multiple cameras to make sure every attendee gets equal space

In an effort to further establish “meeting equity,” Zoom has announced a new feature they are calling Intelligent Director.

When a meeting room full of employees attends a virtual meeting, invariably some attendees wind up looking smaller or out of focus due to them sitting further away from the camera. This issue is exacerbated when some meeting guests attend virtually from home or another meeting space, taking up more screen real estate and pushing those in the back even further out of view. Intelligent Director aims to eliminate this problem by using AI and machine learning to give every attendee an equal amount of screen space, ensuring everyone is in maximum focus and appears the same size as everyone else, even when sitting way in the back.

“Folks that are coming into the room want that personalized experience, want their own video feed,” says Nicole Raymer, Zoom Spaces product specialist. “When folks started making their way back into these spaces, they felt a little outdated, because it was in fact that bowling alley view of the table.”

Intelligent Director builds on Zoom’s Smart Gallery feature, but further enhances things by supporting multiple cameras. This means that if attendees are sitting at different angles in a multi-camera meeting space, Zoom will automatically choose the camera that has the best angle for each participant, giving each individual an optimized place in the meeting.

Intelligent Director currently supports meetings with up to 16 participants, and is in open beta for all Zoom Rooms subscribers.
