French telecom equipment maker Alcatel has won a contract to lay an undersea fiber-optic broadband network in Alaska.

The Kodiak Kenai Fiber Link (KKFL) will be the first fiber-optic link between Anchorage, Alaska, and Seward, and will serve numerous communities on Kenai Peninsula and Kodiak Island. All in all, the cable will serve about 60,000 citizens, as well as Alaska Aerospace Development Corp.’s Launch Complex on Kodiak Island.

“This achievement will enable us to give access to new, advanced services to a larger number of residential and business users, while enhancing the security and quality of existing services,” comments Walt Ebell, CEO of Kodiak Kenai Cable Company. “Alcatel’s outstanding expertise in optical networks, coupled with a top offering of professional services, was the key factor in our choice.”

The cable is scheduled for completion in December 2006, and will stretch more than 900km along the coast of America’s northernmost state.
