Digital Transitions Experts to Speak on AI in Photographic Negative Digitization at VRA 2022

NEW YORK — March 17, 2022 — Digital Transitions, a leading global provider of high-resolution digitization hardware solutions and services, today announced that experts from its service division, Pixel Acuity, will speak about AI applications for digitizing historic photographic negatives at VRA 2022, the Video Resources Association (VRA) annual conference that will take place in Baltimore, March 29-31. The presentation, “Photographic Glass Plates and Birthdates: Secrets to Optimizing AI-Generated Metadata Accuracy with the National Archives of Estonia,” will start at 12:30 p.m. EDT on March 29.

During the hour-long session, Digital Transitions’ head of R&D Doug Peterson will highlight Pixel Acuity’s work for the National Archives of Estonia, which engaged Pixel Acuity to build an AI tool to analyze part of its historic record. The tool adds descriptive metadata that identifies persons of interest in a collection of over 8,000 photographic glass plate negatives, a task that would ordinarily take years of human labor.

Peterson will explain how, by combining commercially available AI models with its bespoke, heritage-specific AI models, Pixel Acuity developed a highly customized solution that greatly expedites accurate metadata generation with minimal human oversight, operates efficiently on large collections, and supports discovery of novel content within the archive.

The VRA, an international association of image media professionals, is a multidisciplinary organization dedicated to furthering research and education in the field of image management within the educational, cultural heritage, and commercial environments.

“The VRA annual conference is an event where we can learn from our colleagues in a fairly intimate setting, and we’re looking forward to sharing the latest advancements in AI as it relates to digitizing photographic glass plates,” said Peter Siegel, co-owner of Digital Transitions. “Doug will demonstrate these advancements through a case study of our recent and ongoing project with the National Archives of Estonia. With this client, we combined a number of strategies to develop descriptive metadata that improves searchability within the archive.”
