Fujifilm GFX100S and Atomos Ninja V readily enabled for medium format 12-bit 4K ProRes RAW recording

Atomos is thrilled to announce that the new Fujifilm GFX100S will be able to record Apple ProRes RAW over HDMI when combined with the Ninja V 5” HDR monitor-recorder. The Ninja V will record up to 4Kp30 12-bit ProRes RAW video from the GFX100S’ exceedingly high 102MP resolution 43.8 x 32.9mm BSI CMOS sensor.

Fujifilm GFX100S

The new GFX100S medium format camera comes in a compact form factor and does not lack in specs since it’s based on its big brother the GFX100, which is also equipped with ProRes RAW recording. The GFX100S’ lower price point has made the medium format camera more accessible to content creators and production companies on smaller production budgets.

Ninja V

The accurate 5” 1000nit HDR high brightness display of the Ninja V allows users to view the GFX100S’ RAW signal in HDR in a choice of HLG and PQ (HDR10) formats. The monitor offers touchscreen access to tools like waveforms, magnify or engage peaking check focus for each angle and make any adjustments to get the perfect HDR or SDR shot.

The Ninja V and RAW recording also opens up the camera to the wider Atomos eco-system for enhanced on-set HDR and SDR monitoring. A video signal can be output from the Ninja V to the Atomos Sumo19, or the recently released NEON line of production monitors, for perfect HDR viewing by directors, clients, focus-pullers, or any crew member who needs access to an accurate view on-set.

Ninja V & GFX100S Combination

The GFX100S and Ninja V combination is a perfect compact rig set-up for scenarios like handheld, placing in tight corners, or mounting onto gimbals. TV dramas, indie films, corporate productions, documentaries, and even motion pictures have the ability to record ProRes RAW. This combination gives filmmakers an affordable set-up and the option to harness ProRes RAW.

 White Balance and ISO Support

Atomos and Fujifilm are committed to presenting users with the full capabilities of the ProRes RAW format which means giving them maximum flexibility when it comes to editing the codec. Fujifilm will therefore fully support White Balance and ISO in an upcoming firmware update in Summer 2021.

Atomos CEO Jeromy Young said: “I am excited that Fujifilm is adding another amazing camera to its line-up with RAW out capability to Atomos monitor recorders. Fujifilm’s long history of color excellence and Apple’s ProRes RAW codec are a winning combination. Add to this their commitment to embracing the full power and potential of ProRes RAW by supplying all the camera metadata needed to allow for the maximum amount of flexibility in post”.

ProRes RAW- the new standard for RAW

Atomos is proud to be adding yet another exciting camera to the ever-growing ProRes RAW eco-system. Throughout 2020 ProRes RAW continued to build momentum with over 20 cameras supporting ProRes RAW with Atomos, cementing its position as the industry standard for RAW video capture. ProRes RAW support continues to expand across camera manufacturers and models, demonstrating industry commitment to the future of ProRes RAW recording. The range of cameras supporting ProResRAW is only set to expand in 2021.

ProRes RAW combines the visual and workflow benefits of RAW video with the incredible real-time performance of ProRes. The format gives filmmakers enormous latitude when adjusting the look of their images and extending brightness and shadow detail, making it ideal for HDR workflows. Both ProRes RAW, and the higher bandwidth, less compressed ProRes RAW HQ are supported. Manageable file sizes speed up and simplify file transfer, media management, and archiving. ProRes RAW is fully supported in Final Cut Pro, Adobe Premiere Pro and Avid Media Composer along with a collection of other apps including ASSIMILATE SCRATCH, Colorfront, FilmLight Baselight and Grass Valley Edius.
