Implementing Integrative Technology in Dentistry

New designs help kids at the dentist

When Deschutes Pediatric Dentistry prepared the design of their new office building, they knew they would need to approach their office technology needs differently. The young patients who are seen in the office can be difficult to keep occupied during procedures. The dentist had previously utilized old 4:3 television sets and Bluetooth headsets for the kids during visits but encountered issues with connectivity and the practice had sanitation concerns with the headphones. Additionally, the equipment was difficult for patients to use.

A Fresh Approach

The senior dentist and owner, Steve Christensen, DMD, reached out to Tony Sprando, Senior AV Designer at Audio Visual Bend, to design and install a new system. The system needed to be easy to control, function seamlessly and reliably with low long-term maintenance costs. . Sprando worked closely with Deschutes Pediatric Dentistry to create a modern approach for the office technology design for their new building.

“I was allowed a lot of creative license for the project and thrilled to hear that they were interested in investing more upfront for a system that would meet their needs well into the future. That’s always my design goal as it keeps long-term ownership costs low. We were on the same page right from the project’s inception,” said Sprando.

“One of our goals was to have an entertainment system at each dental chair that would keep the patient in the ideal position for treatment which   increases the dentist’s workflow while giving the patient a state-of-the-art audiovisual experience,” said Sprando. “We designed it so t only the patient could hear the audio they selected.  And all common areas of the practice use Dante-controlled background music.”

The twelve patient stations include the latest offering from Creston Control, the Creston – MPC3-101-B touchpad, allowing each station to have touch control of the audio and video system at their fingertips. With focused speakers aligned over the pediatric patients, and a video display over the dental chair, the patients are set perfectly, acoustically and visually, for an entertaining distraction during their dental treatment.

In addition to the individual patient stations, the building was fitted with a 12×12 video matrix which screens channels around the building. The lobby of the office boasts an LG 65UM7300PUA Display with an Iadea MBR-1100 Media Player for easy control of digital signage.

Ensuring Quality

In choosing the right equipment for the job, Sprando didn’t hesitate in selecting MSE Audio products for their reliability, assortment, availability and installation convenience. Sprando said, “I’ve worked with SoundTube products for over ten years and with creating a new system design with a short timeline for installation, I didn’t have time to go back and re-specify products if there was a change order. With SoundTube’s unique product assortment and low-profile cans, I know that I’ll find a high-quality speaker to meet the job budget to fit in virtually any ceiling height – that is also fire-rated. I also love that they include all the installation accessories. I know I’ll always have everything I need to complete the job quickly and aesthetically whether new construction or retrofit.”

The whole-building audio system uses SoundTube’s IPD Dante-enabled loudspeakers and is connected from the Creston equipment to the Dante networking technology using the Araknis 16-Port POE Switch, which allows the office to seamlessly control output.

The modifications have increased workflow for the dentists, assistants, hygienists and comfort for the patients. The practice is thrilled with the results. In fact, they plan to duplicate it at their two other offices.
