LOS ANGELES, CA, May 15, 2025 — Detroit born Marc Kinchen, better known as MK, has been one of the foremost producers in house music since he first hit the Billboard Hot Charts with #1 Hits “Always” and “Love Changes” in the early 1990s. Since that time, he has assembled a packed discography of dance floor fillers alongside celebrated remixes for major artists like Celine Dion, Lana Del Ray, Sam Smith, Rihanna, and Pet Shop Boys. Looking to dedicate more time to his own projects since transitioning to more live DJ work in the early 2010s, MK recently christened a new private studio filled with his favorite analog and digital recording gear. To bring together the past and present in a seamless, hybrid fashion, he’s made the Flock Audio PATCH and PATCH XT the brains of his new operation.

History, sound, and dynamics
MK started producing house music tracks at the age of 14 and has been building his own studio spaces for almost as long. Having borne witness to the evolution of the genre and seeing a new generation embrace the sounds and production styles of the music has provided endless inspiration for him as both a producer and a DJ. “What’s cool with House is that it hasn’t changed that much — a lot of the music made back then still sounds current and influences the new music being made now,” he explains. “Dance music producers know their history and it’s great to have such a strong connection with contemporary producers.”
“The kids now are finding their ways to these sounds and techniques while also bringing their own feel to it. The fact that they still love that music and keep coming back to it really keeps me involved and passionate about what’s happening now.”
In addition to being sparked by the fresh influx of talent in the genre, MK’s production is now closely intertwined with his work as a live DJ. Previously preferring the creative atmosphere of his studios to clubs, his time behind the decks has given him a fresh appreciation for audience interaction and live energy. “Being a producer brings a unique viewpoint into DJing,” he says. “You have that heightened awareness of the mix and you notice how different elements impact the audience taking it in.”
“It makes it a lot easier to play and you really get a fresh perspective that you can take back to the studio from playing live. It makes you think deeply about the sounds and dynamics you want to use to see what works.”
Game changing studio routing
Initially driven to seek out the biggest and most impressive gear for his studios — a byproduct of coming up during the era where analog and digital production tools first truly collided — MK’s new private studio reflects his desire for a streamlined workflow that encompasses all of his favorite sounds and tools. Finding the right way to integrate his vast collection of vintage synths and outboard gear into a modern workflow led him to Flock Audio. “In the beginning I always wanted the big boards and patchbays, but now I want convenience,” he explains. “Experience has taught me that time and creative inspiration are valuable, so you want a smooth workflow that brings that about as easily as possible.”
“When I first came across the PATCH series I knew that it was going to be a game changer for me!”
Built around Logic Pro and his SSL AWS 948 Console, MK’s private studio is a treasure trove of high-quality 500-series preamp and compressor modules, vintage synthesizers, and analog effects units. He uses PATCH XT to route them all together with presets of his preferred master chains. “I’m a sucker for good outboard gear and it’s been great to have PATCH to route everything,” he says. “It makes it super easy and I can work so much more quickly to get the sounds I want. My old patch bay is just sitting in the garage now!”
“I always had pieces of gear in my studios that either weren’t wired up correctly or didn’t fit. PATCH XT has quickly become my favorite piece of gear in my studio because it’s been so easy to get it all in there and now I’m spending my time getting great sounds and coming up with cool signal chains rather than struggling to get it all to work.”
