SMPTE and Open Services Alliance for Media to Host Media Microservices Summit, May 11-12 in New York

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. — May 4, 2022 — SMPTE®, the home of media professionals, technologists, and engineers, is partnering with the Open Services Alliance (OSA) for media to present the Media Microservices Summit, hosted by Microsoft in New York City, May 11-12. The free two-day event will offer a comprehensive review of current progress and future initiatives aimed at bringing interoperability to media processing in the cloud and to microservices in particular.

“While we’ve made notable progress in standards work over the past two years, the media industry still faces a frustrating lack of cross-vendor and cross-platform interoperability among microservice-based solutions,” said OSA Executive Director Chris Lennon. “Our goal with the Media Microservices Summit is to bring everyone up to speed on recent work, help them understand how to take advantage of this work, and bring them on board as we continue to solve key challenges of media in the cloud.”

The Media Microservices Summit will kick off with a comprehensive review of the OSA’s purpose and accomplishments, including the output of its first two initiatives by SMPTE: SMPTE 2125 – IMF Registration API and SMPTE 2126 – Microservices Status Reporting and Logging. Presenters will also review the most recent contributions from the OSA to SMPTE, with a focus on vocabulary for media microservices, job processing architecture, privacy, and security.

Potential future initiatives will then take center stage. Attendees will be invited to propose projects that meet the OSA’s guiding principles of solving media microservices challenges that will have a significant impact and can realistically be solved within a reasonable amount of time. The OSA will use these proposed projects to set priorities for the remainder of 2022 and beyond.

While in-person attendance at the Summit is preferred, remote attendance will be an option. Both options are available on the online registration form. The event is free for registered attendees, and advance registration is required.
