Sony took $100 off the price of its second-generation standalone Blu-ray Disc player, shipping the BDP-S300 at a list price of $499 earlier this month. New features include the Dolby Digital Plus audio codec, CD playback, and Bravia Theatre Sync, which uses HDMI to integrate the operation of the player with compatible TVs and A/V receivers. The player can output 1920x1080p/24p video, the highest resolution HD signal available via an HDMI connection. The player also supports MPEG2, MPEG4-AVC, and VC1 video codecs. Standard-definition DVDs are upconverted to 1080p via HDMI. Linear PCM digital audio can be outputted via HDMI, and the player also decodes Dolby Digital Plus. Additional outputs include optical and coaxial audio, and the player has 5.1-channel decoding capability for compatibility with existing receivers. Supported media include BD-ROM, AVC-HD, and MP3 audio and JPEG photos on DVD.
