AvaLAN Wireless Systems, a provider of long-range industrial wireless Ethernet connectivity, appointed Matthew S. Nelson as the company's new CEO and president. Nelson brings a combination of business and technical acumen in the high-tech industry, with more than 20 years of business, technical, and global market experience.

Since its inception five years ago, AvaLAN Wireless has been driven by founder Michael Derby and it now has more then 20,000 industrial, long-range wireless Ethernet devices deployed for surveillance, security, access control, and digital signage.

"AvaLAN is honored and excited to have an individual of Mr. Nelson's caliber at AvaLAN," said Derby in a statement. "Mr. Nelson's professionalism, leadership, and industry experience make him a perfect fit for AvaLAN."

Before joining AvaLAN Wireless, Nelson was with Avocent Corp., where he introduced some of the first wireless VGA/DVI/HDMI extension products and was responsible for marketing and strategic planning in the pro AV and digital signage markets. Nelson has successfully launched several products for Avocent, Motorola, 3COM, Iomega, and Time Domain, as well as the first ultra-wide band chipset, the first single-chip SOC commercially available for broadband DSL, and the first wide-area wireless PC card for laptop computers.
