Samsung and Sony Re-up for LCDs

Samsung Electronics and Sony Corp. signed a contract to produce an additional eighth generation amorphous TFT-LCD in order to meet the increased demand for LCD televisions.

Samsung Electronics and Sony Corp. signed a contract to produce an additional eighth generation amorphous TFT-LCD manufacturing line through their joint venture, S-LCD, in order to meet the increased demand for LCD televisions.

S-LCD was established in April 2004, and began operating its first eighth-generation line in August 2007 to manufacture TFT-LCD panels for Samsung and Sony. The two companies agreed to expand the capacity of the eighth-generation line in response to an increase in worldwide demand for LCD TVs. The total investment for the new 8-2 line will be approximately $1.9 billion.

The 8-2 line will be built in the Tangjeong Complex, and production is targeted to begin in the second quarter of 2009. Production capacity for the line is expected to be 60,000 sheets per month initially.

By adding the output of the 8-2 line to the current eighth and seventh generation lines in Tangjeong, S-LCD is expect to be a more stable and efficient supplier of large-screen LCD panels to Samsung and Sony.
