According to Austin, Texas-based research firm DisplaySearch, Sony is the new leader in LCD TV shipments. In the fourth quarter of 2007, the company passed Sharp, Vizio, and Samsung to claim 12.8 percent of quarterly shipments. DisplaySearch said Sony's increased focus on North America helped.

On the plasma front, Panasonic continued to add to its hefty lead in unit shipments, even as plasma technology loses ground to LCD overall. Its Q4 2007 share of 38.5 percent was up from 29.4 percent the previous quarter.

Panasonic has made it an annual rite of winter to roll out bigger-than-ever plasmas at the International Consumer Electronics Show. This year the company showed off a 150-inch model. Sam's Town Casino in Las Vegas recently installed 15 103-inch Panasonic plasmas, the darling of CES 2006.
