Haivision Launches DVB-to-IP Gateway

Haivision Network Video announced the immediate availability of its new Torpedo family of DVB-to-IP gateways. With the devices, digital broadcasts can be harnessed and delivered over IP video networks without the need to re-encode the content, according to the company. Haivision explains that the Torpedo takes a digital RF DVB signal from a satellite or terrestrial antenna, extracts and filters the MPEG-2 transport stream packets, and retransmits them to multiple multicast or unicast UDP targets via an Ethernet interface.
With a single Torpedo, company officials say a variety of digital satellite TV and radio services can be delivered to viewers over standard IP video networks.
Torpedo supports both standard definition and high-definition satellite (DVB-S and DVB-S2) and terrestrial (DVB-T) signals. It will also support DVB-T2, an emerging standard for terrestrial HD,, early next year. The Torpedo may be used standalone or integrated as part of Haivision’s Furnace end-to-end IP video system. The Furnace provides central control of all Torpedo gateways as well as Haivision’s Makito and Barracuda encoders. In addition, the Furnace can groom the streams from the Torpedo gateways with encryption for media security and forward error correction for stream resiliency, essential features for enterprise IP video applications.
Because video streams generated by broadcasters are relatively high-bandwidth, Haivision said it is pairing the introduction of the Torpedo gateways with its new VF Transit technology. With VF Transit, the Furnace can transrate the original streams into many streams of varying bandwidths for consumption throughout an enterprise. This makes it possible to serve clients on any platform, including desktops, set-top boxes, and mobile devices at bitrates that best suit the enterprise network and viewer.

The Torpedo is available as a standalone appliance supporting multiple channels, or as a blade in Haivision’s 3U rack mountable chassis, which can hold up to nine Torpedo blades. Torpedos are available immediately and are priced from $1,995.
