The new UDC-400 Universal Device Controller is a software-based platform that controls IP or series protocol devices.

The new UDC-400 Universal Device Controller from rental and staging company High Resolution Engineering’s High Resolution Systems division is a software-based platform that controls any device that uses IP (TCP/UDP) or series (232/422/485) protocols.

“All manufacturers of high-resolution processors, routers, and switchers have user interfaces for their own systems,” said Mike Taylor, a partner at High Resolution Systems, in a statement. “The UDC-400 provides a way to control any network or serial technology.”

The software can be used alone or with the USB-connected UDC-400-M control panel, which features 40 buttons that the company says can be assigned any command for any compatible device. In the software, three different pages in red, green, and blue offer a total of 120 programmable buttons.

Users can deploy built-in commands for popular devices or add their own commands via the graphical interface. Alternately, the company’s technical team can develop the commands. The UDC-400—High Resolution Systems’ first product—runs on Windows XP, Vista, and Windows 7 operating systems. It is also touchscreen-compatible and can be used across multiple networks simultaneously.

“The key was coming up with the correct concept of how it should work and finding the people who could write the code to make it happen,” Taylor said of the UDC-400. A prototype of the system reportedly received positive feedback at the National Association of Broadcasters’ Show in April. The UDC-400 begins shipping this summer. High Resolution Systems says it will take orders during InfoComm at booth N1475.
