Tandberg unveiled a new Unified Communications Gateway technology that is compatible with Microsoft Office Communicator R2. According to the company, the new technology enables Microsoft Office Communicator users to experience high-definition video quality when connecting to standards-based systems.

Tandberg claims to be the first company to transcode from Microsoft’s Real Time Video (RTV) codec to the industry-standard H.264 video codec. The new technology is a result of Tandberg’s partnership with Microsoft.

“By strengthening interoperability with Microsoft and continuing to invest in their partnership, Tandberg is sending a signal that the company has no intention of slowing its efforts to advance its vision of an open community of video users,” said Brent Kelly, senior analyst at Wainhouse Research, in a prepared statement. “The UC Gateway is a critical development for enabling video users to connect in the best HD quality no matter where they are or what network they’re on, helping to bring value to customers and drive further adoption of videoconferencing.”

“Tandberg is breaking down the barriers to widespread video adoption and creating a standards-based video community where no one is out of reach,” said Tandberg CEO Fredrik Halvorsen in a statement.

Tandberg will preview the Unified Communications Gateway technology at the Microsoft Tech Ed conference in Berlin, November 9-13, 2009.
