Fundamental to achieving the best possible sound or video quality possible in an AV system, signal distribution, though a seemingly simple Point A to Point B task, can quickly become an absorbing job for the commercial AV professional. With a fantastic range of signal path choices as well as modes of delivery available, integrating the best signal distribution system becomes a matter of scale, need, and speed. Here are some of the latest signal distribution offerings from our industry’s manufacturers.

Adder Technology ADDERLink Infinity dual

Adder Technology’s ADDERLink Infinity dual network DVI extender allows a computer and its operator to be separated by almost any distance without any loss in capabilities, reduction in video resolution, quality, or USB latency. Providing dual link DVI that allows it to support very large screens such as the Apple Cinema Display or dual monitor set‐ups, the Infinity dual interfaces USB peripherals such as the keyboard, mouse, or graphics tablet, together with DVI for the video display, over a standard layer 3Gb Ethernet network, on copper or fiber. A network will support a large number of computers and workstations, allowing one user to switch freely between computers, to move with the same screen experience between locations, or even co‐locate the same device.

AudioScience Hono CobraNet Mini series

AudioScience’s Hono CobraNet Mini series packs up to four channels into a compact, fit-anywhere case. The Hono CobraNet 4.4M and 2.2M Mini receives four or two channels, respectively, of 48kHz CobraNet and sends them to their balanced analog audio outputs, while simultaneously inputting four or two channels of mic/line level balanced audio and transmitting them as CobraNet. The Mini receives four or two channels of CobraNet and sends them to their AES/EBU audio outputs, while simultaneously inputting four or two channels of AES/EBU audio and transmitting them as CobraNet. AudioScience’s ASIControl application software sets up all internal features of the unit and allows CobraNet routing connections to be set up between the Hono series units and any other CobraNet device on the network.

The DXM-3232 by Aurora Multimedia is a low-cost 32×32 digital media card cage matrix system that, as part of the Digital Xtreme series, has a variety of cards to choose from to simplify the installation and reduce the external component count. Available as HDMI, DVI, HDSDI, VGA, Cat, and fiber cards among others, the DXM card frame can be controlled by RS-232 and has a redundant power supply option as well.

Crestron DigitalMedia Presentation System 300 (DMPS-300-C)

Touted as the next generation of Crestron’s MPS Multimedia Presentation, the budget-friendly DigitalMedia Presentation System 300 (DMPS-300-C) delivers a complete high-definition presentation and control and signal routing solution that integrates a control processor, multimedia matrix switcher, mic mixer, audio DSP, and amplifier. Integrated DigitalMedia 8G+ inputs and outputs provide a one-wire interface for remote sources and display devices using a standard Cat-5e wire or premium DM 8G cable. Supporting wire lengths up to 330ft. (100 meters), DMPS-300-C can also provide an ideal interface to a central DigitalMedia switcher as part of a larger multi-room or room-combining system.

Digital Rapids TouchStream

Digital RapidsTouchStream live streaming appliances are available in a variety of analog and digital input configurations supporting SD and HD video, with output for viewing platforms including the Web, tablets, mobile phones, and IPTV set-top boxes. With controls that are accessed through an intuitive touch-screen interface with integrated video monitoring (eliminating the need for laptops, keyboards, mice, and separate monitors), TouchStream systems features include audio controls, picture controls and graphic overlay that allow users to refine the incoming source and add branding such as a logo to the outgoing stream. Video can also be archived to files on optional storage (even in different formats or resolutions than the live stream) for later on-demand use. A configurable set of controls can be locked with a password, letting administrators limit the functions available to basic users to as little as preferred—even just start and stop.

DVIGear DVI-7335

DVIGear DVI-7335 ouput

DVI-7335 by DVIGear is an HDCP-compliant fiber-optic transport system capable of distributing high-resolution DVI and HDMI signals over cable lengths up to 1.5km (4,920ft.). The DVI-7335 consists of an optical transmitter and an optical receiver, which support both multimode and single-mode fiber cables. DVI and HDMI input signals from a source device such as a PC, cable set-top box, or Blu-Ray player are converted into light pulses by an optical transmitter module for transmission over three strands of fiber-optic cable. On the display side, an optical receiver module converts the light pulses back to a DVI/HDMI signal for display on a monitor or projector.

Fiberplex’s LightViper LV-DS08-P is a complete 8-channel bi-directional fiber-optic drive snake system designed for production use. It features two 8×8 drive units, one Neutrik tactical fiber cable (100 meters) on a reel, and all of the necessary copper breakout cables. The system will accept eight inputs from any analog or digital source, and can output eight analog and eight digital channels to feed analog amplifiers, powered speakers, or analog or digital speaker processor units. Use of the eight analog and eight digital outputs can also be conducted simultaneously.

FSR TwisterPro

The TwisterPro UTP transmitter/receiver system by FSR allows video, stereo audio, RS-232 data, and IR signal transmission over ordinary Cat-5, 5e, 6, and cable. Capable of runs up to 1,000ft., the TwisterPro system features wall-plate-style transmitters (one-gang and two-gang) and receivers (two-gang) in three colors: black, white, and ivory. Matching Decora trim rings are included for standalone use, or the units can be populated along with FSR’s IPS component and plates for a complete interface solution. There are also brick-style housing versions that can be used on any surface or rackmounted using the accessory rack kits if preferred. TPRO receivers with skew compensation adjustments are optional and help adjust for misconvergence of the red, green, and blue video signals that can occur as a result of inherent delay caused by differences in cable twist lengths. The system can be powered at either the transmitter or receiver end by the optional power supply.

Gefen ToolBox 8×8 Matrix for HDMI with FST

The GefenToolBox 8×8 Matrix for HDMI with FST (Fast Switching Technology) allows direct connections between different high definition sources and displays without networking. Any eight sources can be switched to any eight displays using this new matrix. High-definition resolutions up to 1080p full HD with 3DTV passthrough are delivered instantly when selected. FST is a Gefen technology that speeds the HDCP (high-bandwidth digital content protection) handshaking process, which in the past could take up to 10 seconds in transition when switching between sources. With FST, those 10 seconds have been reduced to nearly no delay when switching sources, with high-definition video appearing on the display immediately with no latency. Installation is simple, requiring the connection of eight high-def sources to the eight HDMI inputs, and the connection of eight high-def displays to the eight HDMI outputs. Users can assign any source to any display, relaying video and multi-channel digital audio with no signal delays. The 8×8 Matrix for HDMI with FST offers local front-panel control, IR remote access and RS-232 for automation, IP control, and is a lower cost alternative to previous product offerings.

Gepco V-Light Active Fiber Cable System

Gepco’s V-Light Active Fiber Cable System, designed with easy-to-use copper connections, is a reliable and durable interface for high-speed serial digital video transmission over single-mode fiber with data transfer rates up to 1.485Gbps. Inside each weather-tight V-Light connector shell, the fiber is sealed and isolated, while the electrical signal is converted to an optical one (or vice versa). With signal transmission of up to 10km, V-Light active fiber cable assemblies consist of an exceptionally rugged and lightweight single-mode tactical fiber cable with V-Light connectors on each end. Completing the V-Light System, V-Light panels serve as beginning and ending points of the video signal transmission. Panels come with either two, three, or four panel-mount connectors, providing an easy connection with a fan out to BNC connectors.

IHSE Draco Tera 48 and 80 series

IHSE’s Draco Tera 48 and 80 series of switch matrix frames are the latest additions to the company’s Draco Tera 160 and 288 series of HD-KVM technology matrix switch solutions. Now offered in four frame sizes, the Draco Tera offers non-blocking switch technology to handle digital video resolutions up to 1920×1200 at 60Hz, 1080p60, and 2K as well as supporting USB 2.0, bi-directional audio, and serial data interfaces, while providing for a wide range of extender modules to fit any application. Each Draco Tera system contains an internal CPU that allows users to control functions via an onscreen display, a software user interface, or an RS-232 serial interface. Additionally, the Draco Tera can easily be configured through any third-party control system such as Crestron or AMX.

Kramer CORE the VS 1616D

Kramer has introduced a family of three multi-format modular routers as part of its CORE end-to-end solution: the VS 1616D, VS-3232D, and VS-6464D, with matching input and output boards, including DVI, HDMI and dual-link DVI signal boards as well as fiber and Kramer DGKat twisted-pair input and output boards. Highly configurable, the boards can seamlessly connect to Kramer’s CORE accessory devices, including DGKat transmitters and receivers, fiber transmitters, and receivers and video scalers. Kramer’s CORE routers also provide flexibility for infrastructure conversion, supporting copper-based cabling, fiber cabling, or twisted-pair cabling, which can be used simultaneously.

Magenta Research MultiView II

Magenta Research has upgraded its MultiView line. MultiView II enhancements are all designed to make it easier to replicate 1080p resolution (and higher) video at distances to 2,000ft. Improvements include a totally revamped all external configuration scheme with easy-to-use buttons and status LEDs, improved EDID and DDC modes of operation, improved sync control, fourth-pair configuration options for auxiliary data like serial and audio, streamlined connector locations for more intuitive rack mounting, and fully backwards compatibility with all previous MultiView equipment. Products in the new line include MultiView II DVI, T4, STx and XRTx transmitters, plus MultiView II AK600 and AK1200 receivers.

Consisting of six new modules, Multidyne’s new HD-3000-II family provides customers with a choice of LC, ST, FC, or SC connectors, depending on the converter model selected. The company’s HD-3000-II converters are compliant with all SMPTE specifications and are housed in a rugged enclosure that stands up to daily production. The HD-3000-II line offers the flexibility to convert HDSDI signals to optical fiber and output them as single or dual HDSDI feeds. Dual-channel models allow the conversion of two channels, making them ideal for 3D, dual-link HDSDI, or two completely independent HDSDI channels. SD, HD, and 3G signals can be intermixed in any combination. Also, the HD-3000-II converters offer electrical isolation that eliminates ground loop problems.

Pesa PRO-3GSDI-1616

Pesa’s new PRO-3GSDI-1616 routing switcher supports all common SMPTE and ITU standard serial digital video signals, as well as embedded audio and other ancillary data required for HD-SDI and DVB/ASI broadcast sources. For digital cinema high-definition video distribution requirements, it can be configured to switch SMPTE 372M dual-link HD-SDI in configurations up to 8×8. Other features include support of standard data rates from 50Mbps to 3Gbps and video transports up to 1080p/60. All inputs are auto-equalized. With standard SMPTE formatted outputs, each signal is auto-sensed and reclocked to the appropriate transport stream. Signals can be re-clocked up to 100 meters for 1080p/60. For non-standard formats, re-clocking circuitry can be set to bypass mode. Two independent reference inputs allow easy selection of genlock from a black burst or tri-level sync source. Two models are available: the PRO-3GSDI-1616-C and the PRO-3GSDI-1616-PB, which includes a local pushbutton control panel. Both models feature an internal power supply and can have multiple remote control panels added via an Ethernet interface.

Riedel MediorNet

Riedel’s MediorNet combines signal transport, routing and signal processing, and conversion into one integrated realtime network solution. Based on a modular system, the frame provides one slot for the processing card, six high-speed card slots (four with two 4.5Gb and two with four 4.25Gb connections to the backplane), and two low-speed card slots (each one with two 125Mb connection to the backplane). All modules and cards are hot swappable, while redundant power supplies guarantee maximum reliability. MediorNet frames can be rackmounted in a number of positions—for example, will all connectors on the front or on the rear side, or recessed to allow cabling from the front but without connectors or cables exceeding the rack’s dimensions—while the IEC connectors can be located front or rear independently from the other cabling.

RT-Com’s OBHD-2C HDMI fiber-optic extender is the latest in the company’s line of fiber-optic extenders for digital video. Built with optical conversion technology that enables noise-free and high-resolution (1080p) extension up to 6,500ft., while compliant to HDCP, the OBHD-2C also features separate HDMI transmitter and receiver modules connect with LC connectors, uncompressed digital video and audio signal, and includes an external 5V power supply adapter and an HDMI copper cable. A DVI version, the OBCA-2C, is also available.

Switchcraft 700 Series A/V Direct Boxes

Switchcraft’s 700 Series A/V Direct Boxes convert the outputs of equipment such as MP3 players, laptops, and DJ mixers to balanced, mic level signals that can be connected to audio consoles, mic preamps, and house sound systems. A premium, fully shielded isolation transformer protects the purity of sound from ground loops while providing a truly uncolored audio output. All stereo inputs on the SC700CT are summed to mono and output to a single 3-pin XLR connector.

The 1T-CT-670 series from TV One extends HDMI signals to remote display devices using a single fiber-optic cable. The individual components of the HDMI over fiber extender system consist of the 1T-CT- 671 transmitter and the 1T-CT-672 receiver, which constitutes a system used to transmit deep color (12 bits) v1.3 HDMI with HDCP signals at resolutions up to 1080p, plus the transmission of embedded lossless audio, over a single fiber optic cable. The 1T-CT-670 series can also be used to transmit encrypted, audio-based graphics data. The system can achieve signal distribution distances of up to 1,000 meters (3,280ft.) for signals up to and including 1080p resolution. The transmitter and receiver products also feature the unique TV One-task locking power connectors to enhance overall system mechanical security.

TVOne 1T-CT-670 series

The ZvPro 280 by ZeeVee is a combined HD encoder and RF modulator in a 1RU package, making it affordable to create an HDTV channel and distribute over coax wiring to every on-premise HDTV. Featuring heavy-duty construction with robust internal power supply and fan cooling, the ZvPro 280 has 1080 capability, 2-channel audio capability that delivers a video stream in two different languages on two different channels, closed captioning with the optional ZvCC module, and a RS-232 port for integration with standard control systems.
