The biggest challenge facing switchers and routers is the wide variety of digital and analog video formats being used. Manufacturers have noted that this trend will continue and have responded with switching systems that can be easily customized. Asymmetrical input/output capacity, automatic signal format recognition, and integral EDID management represent a few of the capabilities that today’s routers include. The systems listed here are typical of the hardware brought to the task.

Altinex has provided a number of control options for the MX430-101 HDCP-compliant 8x8 HDMI matrix switcher including RS-232, optical or wired IR, and the front-panel buttons that can store and recall up to six snap-shot configurations. The unit regenerates and re-clocks output signals and can handle EDID automatically from the first recognized display, or allow the user to select a resolution from an internally stored table. The switcher supports HDMI V1.3 with deep color and audio formats including Dolby TrueHD, Dolby Digital Plus, and DTS HD Master Audio.

The latest switcher from AMX, the Enova DGX 32 Enclosure, can be fitted with any combination of input and output boards and features an integrated NetLinx controller, embedded Ethernet switch, and redundant power supplies. Paired with DXLink transmitters and receivers, the system can send analog and digital video, including HDMI/HDCP, on twisted-pair cables up to 100 meters long. The system uses SmartScale Technology to set the resolution to optimum for each connected display rather than the best one common to all. The DGX 32 Enclosure will pass Ethernet and stream IP video, and it fits in a 6RU chassis.

Format versatility is the hallmark of the Analog Way SMX200 Smart MatriX 12x2 scaled matrix switcher. The unit includes analog video inputs on 15-pin Sub-D, DVI, SD/HD-SDI, and computer formats up to 2K, while the outputs include computer 2K, DVI, and RGBHV. The switcher features quad scalers, and it can produce live transition effects for presentations and up to two PIPs on a still background on each output. It can also be set up with eight presets per output and a variety of remote control options.

The AT-HDDVI1616-AM 16x16 DVI and audio matrix switcher from Atlona is HDCP compliant and it has three remote control options including RS-232, IR, and LAN in addition to the front-panel buttons and LCD. It has nine programmable presets with independent audio and video routing capability, and non-volatile memory can save the EDID configuration seen on each input port. Switching is as fast as half a second, and there is support for resolutions up to 1920x1200 or 2Kx1K. The 4RU frame has a redundant power supply that can take over if the primary fails.

Nine preset routing configurations may be stored and recalled. Up to eight input and output cards may be selected, and each of these has four connection ports.

Ease of operation tops Barco’s list of design features in the PDS series switchers, and the company combines this with the ability to output the program signal on DVI and analog connections simultaneously. The inputs of the PDS-902 include four VGA, four DVI-I, and a 3G SDI on BNC connectors, while the outputs provide both program and preview. The 1RU switcher can be operated on its Ethernet port using computer, Smartphone, tablet, or by Encore or ScreenPRO-II controller. The unit provides 10-bit sampling and processing, high-quality scaling, and a de-interlacer with diagonal filter.

The AC1123A from Black Box Network Services is a 16x16 matrix switcher with video inputs on VGA and audio inputs on 3.5mm jacks. The video outputs are VGA and the audio outs are on screw terminals. The unit may be controlled by front-panel buttons or remotely by serial connections. It can also store and recall up to eight preset routing patterns manually or on a time schedule using the built-in clock. All of the VGA switchers can be used with the Black Box mini Cat-5 extenders to carry VGA signals several hundred feet.

Supporting SMPTE compliant 3G, HD, and SD-SDI data rates, the OM32 can connect with single-mode and multimode fiber in a single system, while remote control is available via serial or Ethernet ports. The 3RU chassis is available with LC or ST fiber connectors.

The unit can also handle stereo and multi-channel sound simultaneously along with providing support for Dolby TrueHD, DTS-HD Master Audio, and uncompressed linear PCM. It is based on a modular architecture with 32 input card slots and eight quad output card slots. DM switchers also support routing of DVI, DisplayPort Multimode, and RGB computer video signals. The appropriate DM receivers can add scaling capability.

Custom configuration and expandability is a main theme with DVIGear and the MXP series routing switchers exemplify this by allowing a selection of more than 50 different types of I/O cards that can be used in any combination. For example, an analog VGA or HD-SDI signal can be input on copper cables and output as an HDMI signal over a fiber-optic cable. The DVI-MXP-FR80 provides all of the MXP series features on 80 I/O connections in a 15RU frame. EDID management is stored on up to 50 factory presets and 50 user-defined memories.

The MFR 3G/HD/SD/ASI Routing Switcher from For-A can link together multiple units and features SNMP and browser remote control. The MFR-3232 extends the features to 32 I/O and its inputs, along with those of the other models, are fully compliant with SMPTE 424M, 292M, 259M, and DVB-ASI. Options include redundant CPUs and power supplies. The chop function allows “A-B” comparison between two sources by holding one button and repeatedly pushing another. Several sizes of rack-mounted remote control units are available.

The MX-FR80R matrix switcher frame from Lightware USA supports a range of signal formats including DVI-I, DVI-D, HDMI, DVI-HDCP, HDSDI, Cat-5 twisted-pair, and/or fiber optic. The frame can be expanded from 8x8 with 8-channel I/O cards up to 80x80. The Dual Link DVI I/O boards have four channels per board. Any type of input signal can be tied to any type of output connection and the MX-FR80R is equipped with redundant power supplies. Control options include RS-232, RS-422, TCP/IP, and a built-in web server. All frames are Vista Spyder and Barco Encore compatible.

I/O can be expanded from 4x4 up to 32x32 via modular cards (four inputs or four outputs per card). A Windows or Linux computer can control the unit via network or a third-party control system can connect on a serial port. TVOne selected scaled output modules for the C3-340 CORIO matrix router so that it can provide up, down, and cross conversion between a number of analog and digital video formats through 3G-SDI. All of the unit’s functions can be remote controlled on serial connections with RS-232/422/485, USB, or on IP links, with direct control via the unit’s front panel LCD. Integral audio switching is provided to route audio from the HDMI-compatible DVI input or SDI input to the DVI and SDI outputs. The 4RU frame also features an optional redundant, hot-swappable internal power supply unit and power inlet.
