In this month’s issue, we are showcasing the various devices used for capturing, recording, and streaming AV. Typical applications for these devices include recording meetings, presentations, and lectures. Gone are the days of reel-to-reel, cassette, and VHS; now everything is digitally captured and recorded onto hard drives. In addition to capturing and recording conventional meetings and presentations, video capture/ streaming is also used for social media including video blogs, Facebook, and webcasting.

The Barix USB FTP Recorder is a recording application ideal for lecture capture that is designed for live recording to any remote server (to FTP server or Audio logger), or to store the recorded audio on the local USB stick with automated backup to FTP server. IT administrators will find this reliable, standalone network appliance from Matrox simple to set up and integrate into any open Video Management System or Lecture Management System. Fully schedulable, the Monarch LCS eliminates the requirement for complex recording equipment in order to capture presentations in lecture halls. A typical Monarch LCS setup consists of video and audio of an instructor and supporting digital material, such as presentation slides, to be mixed into a single recording. The LCS can be configured in a number of modes that include layouts such as picture-in-picture (PiP) and side-by-side (SbS). Unique is the LCS’ ability to encode in dual mode; giving the power to dynamically switch between SbS, PiP, or full screen directly to the viewer. The fact that the LCS can be scheduled to start in a preselected mode through the scheduling system of the educational facility ensures that beyond delivery, academic faculty do not need to be involved in the technical aspects of lecture capture. The LCS’ price point and concealable nature allow it to be integrated into every classroom without affecting the behavior of the educator or the experience of the student.
