The 573/574 extender set from Kramer was one of the more inexpensive ones tested. The manual and website stated that this extender set only works with shielded cable, and our testing verified that the extender did not function all with non-shielded cable. The boxes were one of the smallest tested, which would be useful in tight locations where space was a premium. There were minimal connections on the unit, which made it simple to connect. The set required power at only the transmitter and the receiver did not have a power supply since its power was supplied by the transmitter. The style of power connector on the transmitter had a locking screw-on connector to prevent the power cable from coming loose accidentally. There were lights on the front to aid in diagnostics that showed power, in, and out status. As we did with several manufacturers, we made a call to tech support to find out how helpful they were and how easy they were to work with. We were placed on hold for more than 15 minutes then went to voicemail without a live person ever answering. We left a message and got a call back around noon the next day that would not have helped if we were in the middle of a time-sensitive installation at a jobsite. The overall performance was on the lower end of all units tested. Since it does not work with non-shielded cable, the applications for a retrofit using existing cable are limited. The distance obtained with Cat-6 cable was 200ft., which was less than the average distance of 350ft. obtained from all units we evaluated.
