Sheffield Family Life Center Upgrades with Innova SON

Nov 14, 2001 12:00 PM

The sounds of gospel music, sung by a 125-member choir backed by acontemporary band in Sheffield Family Life Center’s 3500-seatauditorium come courtesy of a carefully designed audio system.Sheffield is a sanctuary for a multicultural Pentecostal congregationin Kansas City, Missouri; and the new facility is home to manydifferent types of church activities, from choir and theatricalperformances to a multitude of ministries and programs.

The center’s multipurpose use was one of the main design challengesduring the project. Acoustic Dimensions handled auditorium design, acoustics, sound isolation and noise control, audio systems, videoprojection and theatrical lighting during the process. Architect Manteland Teter designed the structure; and A/V contractor HarvestProductions installed the sound system. The team decided to use InnovaSON’s Essential Live consoles to combine easy transitions with modestsize. A simpler console would not be able to handle all thesancturary’s events. And a larger console would complicate thetransitions between events. The Essential Lives, placed a FOH, atmonitors and in a recording room, also worked well because of theirsimple wiring and digital signals. An Innova SON stage box with athree-way split handles all the microphone signals to the threeconsoles via two coaxial lines.

Brian Elwell of Acoustic Dimensions arranged for digitalsynchronization from the stage box, through the consoles, and into aPeavey MediaMatrix system, which delivers LCR sound to Crown MA Seriesamplifiers and flown EAW clusters. The recording room keeps a digitalsignal throughout, ending at a digital recorder.
