Acer’s upcoming monitor promises 3D visuals and immersive audio with no glasses or headphones

Eye tracking, head tracking, and AI come together to promise a peripheral-free immersive experience

Acer has announced the upcoming release of a 4K monitor that offers glasses-free 3D visuals, as well as headphones-free spatial audio.

The SpatialLabs View Pro 27 is a 27-inch, 4K monitor that takes advantage of infrared camera and eye tracking technology, coupled with a lenticular lens to display 3D content to the user. Acer says that the infrared camera runs at 60 frames per second and is accurate with lighting as low as 10 lux. Unfortunately, due to the nature of the glasses-free 3D technology, only one person can view the display in 3D at a time. This shouldn’t be a problem, though, as Acer is positioning the monitor towards creative professionals that would take advantage of a “3D canvas.” As such, the monitor ships with SpatialLabs Experience Center Pro, which includes a suite of applications for producing 3D content. Additionally, the lens is switchable, meaning that the monitor can easily function as a 2D 4K display when needed.

Spatial audio is achieved by a pair of 2.5W speakers that protrude out from the lower left and right sides of the monitor. Acer claims that it leverages AI technology, coupled with head tracking, to present a “completely immersive 3D experience.”

“The AI-powered sound innovation uses beamforming directional acoustic signal transmissions and head-tracking mechanisms to produce spatial audio projected from two upward-facing 2.5-watt speakers,” reads Acer’s announcement.

While glasses-free 3D is not a new concept, Acer is one of the first manufacturers to promise immersive, 3D audio without additional external speakers or headphones, so users will have to wait and see if the SpatialLabs View Pro 27 delivers upon its release in Q1 of 2024.
