4K OLED will soon hit the skies for the first time as part of a commercial in-flight system for Icelandair. The 4K displays are part of the Astrova line, manufactured by Panasonic Avionics, and are offered in five different sizes.
“The larger screens will be available to airlines in five sizes: 19, 22, 27, 32, and 42 inches, boosting the appeal of Astrova for the widebody aircraft market. Each of the new monitors will be 4K OLED, enabling Panasonic Avionics to offer airlines the highest definition and image quality in the skies in every aircraft cabin,” said Panasonic Avionics in a press release.
United Airlines partners with Panasonic for upgraded in-flight entertainment
The implementation of the new Astrova displays represent the first time 4K video will be available to commercial flyers. While they will come aboard select Icelandair planes later this year, they are planned to later be featured on flights by United Airlines beginning next year. Astrova displays will specifically be coming to select new Boeing 787 and Airbus A321XLR units operated by United.
Additional international airlines to receive Astrova displays include Qantas, Qatar and Egyptair.
