Conflicting reports of Apple’s microLED development surface

Can we expect Apple microLED displays in the future, or has the whole project been discarded?

Industry insiders are divided on whether or not Apple has canceled its decade-long development of multiuse microLED displays, which the company has intended to use for the Apple Watch and other products.

As reported by FlatpanelsHD, Bloomberg’s Mark Gurman has spoken out against reports that Apple has ceased its microLED projects. Gurman took to X to respond to sensor supplier AMS Osram’s comments that a partner (believed to be Apple) canceled its microLED development, writing “AMS-Osram was one supplier in the Apple Watch Ultra microLED project. There are several others. I doubt it was canceled.” Gurman has a history of delivering Apple-insider information with a high level of accuracy.

Gurman’s reassuring remarks come after multiple sources have raised the alarm on Apple microLED. AMS Osram comments were from a conference call where the supplier revealed “a cornerstone project underpinning its microLED strategy got unexpectedly cancelled today” by a partner.

This assumption was reinforced by Ming-Chi Kuo, a supply chain analyst who reported, “My latest survey indicates that Apple has canceled the Micro LED Apple Watch projects because Apple thinks that Micro LED can’t add significant value to this product, and the production costs are too high to make it economically viable. Apple has laid off many people from the Micro LED development team. There’s currently no visibility on any Micro LED-related projects.

It remains to be seen whether or not we can expect any microLED products from Apple in the near future, but if Gurman is to be believed, there’s no need to worry.
