Canon has announced the MS-500, a security-focused camera that features a SPAD (Single-Photon Avalanche Diode) sensor. SPAD sensors magnify each photon entering a pixel one million times, before converting the data into a digital signal. This method eliminates noise, and is poised to have a big impact on professional imaging.
According to Canon, the MS-500 has the capability of capturing clear color shooting in light conditions as low as 0.001 lux, which is near complete darkness. The company says the camera is designed for “areas with extremely high-security levels, such as seaports, public infrastructure facilities, and national borders.” For these applications, Canon says the camera is capable of capturing footage of subjects “for several miles, even at night.” The MS-500 is compatible with Canon’s broadcast zoom lenses, and uses the company’s B4 mount.
The MS-500 security camera is slated for release in September, for a price of $25,000.
