WATCH: Eye-tracking transparent display gives sightseers context about whatever they are viewing

Information pops up on vehicle's windows, and can be tapped to learn more

Developed by Industrial Technology Research Institute (ITRI) of Taiwan, AR Interactive Vehicle Display is a system that combines eye tracking, transparent microLED display technology, and GPS tracking to present information to sightseers in real time based on what they are looking at. Information pops up in a display integrated into a vehicle’s window according to whatever the viewer is looking at.

ITRI is no stranger to eye tracking technology, as they have implemented a similar system in public aquariums to educate guests on what fish they are viewing. Utilizing the technology in a moving vehicle presents its own challenges, which ITRI has developed solutions for. For instance, visual information presented by the  AR Interactive Vehicle Display moves along the transparent screen according to the vehicle’s movement to help prevent motion sickness.

The transparent display integrated into the vehicle is also touch responsive, allowing passengers to tap information they would like to know more about. This additional information automatically surrounds the passenger’s view of the real-life object, but does not obscure it.
