Freddie Mercury’s home recording gear goes to auction

The auction holds hundreds of opportunities to own a piece of rock n' roll history

Fine art company Sotheby’s has announced it will be auctioning off hundreds of items that belonged to Queen frontman and rock icon Freddie Mercury. The auctions, titled Freddie Mercury: A World Of His Own, include personal items such as photos, extravagant furniture, and stage costumes. Even handwritten, autographed lyric manuscripts are on the auction block. Perhaps most noteworthy, though, as Mix’s Clive Young points out, are a few pieces of the singer’s home recording gear.

Lot 2123 of the “Crazy Little Things 2” auction consists of a RAM Micro RM 10 channel mixing desk, paired with a Fostex Model 80 tape recorder, as well as a pair of Electro-Voice Sentry 100A Studio Monitors. All together, these cutting-edge (at the time) pieces of equipment afforded Mercury the luxury and convenience of a home recording studio to test ideas and structure songs. Sotheby’s has the estimate for the Lot at 500 – 1,000 GBP. It’s worth noting that all items in the lot are listed with the disclaimer, “This is being sold as a decorative object and not in working order.” Still, it is an exciting opportunity to own a piece of rock n’ roll recording history.
