Hisense’s rival to Samsung’s The Frame launching this summer

CanvasTV looks to offer an art lover's dream TV at a more affordable price point

Hisense is eyeing Samsung’s success with their Frame line of TVs, and is now looking to directly compete with the upcoming launch of the CanvasTV. Releasing in late summer of this year, CanvasTV will be available in the Americas in 55″ and 65″ models, featuring a matte finish to best display works of art when not in use, just like Samsung’s popular series.

Hisense’s new line features a 4K QLED display, and is trying to battle Samsung via the pricetag, with the 55″ running for $999, and the 65″ at $1299, beating Samsung’s prices of same sized models by $500 and $700, respectively. Hisense says that the CanvasTV strives for energy-efficiency, with its “Art Mode” utilizing a light sensor to adjust brightness as needed, and a motion detector turning the display completely off when it detects the room is empty.

Samsung’s speaker disguised as picture frame to release soon

This is all well and good, but what about the art?

“CanvasTV’s Art Mode unlocks a curated world of free artistic masterpieces with a collection of pre-loaded works spanning abstract, modern, and renaissance styles that transform walls into works of art,” says Hisense. “A simple press of the Art Mode button on the remote gives users the power to seamlessly transition between iconic artworks and personal photographs, which can be customized with rotation preferences and stylized mats. This versatile feature empowers users to curate their own elevated decor, turning CanvasTV into a continuously evolving artistic centerpiece.”

Whether or not Hisense will continue to support its own art ecosystem like Samsung has done remains to be seen, but it looks like the company is banking on similar specs at a cheaper price to do much of the heavy lifting. Other features of the CanvasTV include:

  • 144Hz refresh rate
  • Runs on GoogleTV
  • Built-in multi-channel 2.0.2 speakers
  • HDMI 2.1 support
  • Teak frame, walnut and white frames sold separately

While availability has only been revealed for the Americas, news regarding a European release is anticipated to come later this year.
