It hasn’t been a good year for Humane’s AI Pin, a product that was supposed to revolutionize the way humans interacted with AI in their daily life. Instead, the wearable device launched in April of this year to extremely negative reviews, criticizing everything from the AI Pin’s usefulness to performance, so much so that Humane lowered its price from $700 to $500 after just two months after its release.
The AI Pin has just been dealt another blow, as the US Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a safety recall for the device’s wireless Charge Case Accessory. While the AI Pin ships with a home charging dock, the Charge Case Accessory is sold separately for $149. According to the CPSC, the Charge Case Accessory’s lithium battery is prone to overheating and posing a fire risk. The official recall notice notes that affected devices were sold between November 2023 to May of 2024. The CPSC states:
“Consumers should immediately stop using the recalled Charge Case Accessory and contact Humane to receive a full refund or free replacement. Consumers will have the option to receive a refund or a replacement Charge Case Accessory. Consumers who purchased the Charge Case Accessory will receive a $149 refund, while consumers who purchased the Charge Case as part of the Ai Pin Complete System will receive a $129 refund.”

Humane explains as part of its statement regarding the recall:
“Our investigation determined that the battery supplier was no longer meeting our quality standards and that certain battery cells supplied by this vendor may pose a fire safety risk. As a result, we immediately disqualified this battery vendor while we work to identify a new vendor to avoid such issues and maintain our high quality standards.”
The company goes on to emphasize that no other Humane product is determined to have a defective lithium battery, and therefore only the Charging Case Accessory is affected by the recall.
