Mini’s next-gen vehicles get AV makeover, large circular OLED screen

The upcoming generation of vehicles is expected to launch later this year

Last week, Mini gave its first preview of its upcoming generation of vehicles, and one thing in particular stood out: a complete reimagining of the cars’ AV systems.

At the center of each revamped system is a vibrant, round OLED display measuring 9.4 inches across. This screen, which Mini proclaims is the first of its kind in the auto industry, serves as the display hub for all infotainment in the vehicle. The display will run on the new Mini Operating Software 9, which is based on an Android Open Source Project (AOSP) software stack.

The new display is a nod to the Mini’s classic, centrally located speedometer. CNET reports firsthand accounts that the OLED screen is very thin and nearly bezel free. Various themes and presets allow for users to color customize their interior, from the display and through the entire dashboard. The customization doesn’t stop there, though, as users can choose their preferred ambient cabin lighting, and even unique gauge displays.

Spike, the cartoon dog personal assistant that Mini previously revealed, makes his debut in Mini Operating Software 9. Users can say “Hey Mini” to queue up Spike (or another personal assistant-a cartoon Mini), which will fulfill various tasks, from getting directions to activating driving assistant features.

Mini’s upcoming generation of vehicles is expected to launch later in the year.
