Roku sued over allegedly bricking TVs

Roku is being accused of intentionally shipping defective updates

Roku is on the receiving end of a class action lawsuit, filed in California, that accuses the company of intentionally issuing defective software updates that rendered TVs unusable. The suit alleges that the affected TVs get stuck in a boot loop, or fail to show anything other than a black screen.

“Roku’s software updates are repetitively defective, materially impairing the functionality of Roku products, rendering many consumers’ televisions either entirely unusable (‘bricked’), blacked out or otherwise substantially degraded in terms of device performance,” the suit alleges.

TCL North America is also targeted by the suit, as some of the affected devices are TCL-branded Roku TVs. According to Android Police, the TVs being affected are Roku Select and Plus Series models, while the  TCL-branded models include 3-,4-,5-, and 6-Series Roku TVs.
