Six Flags permanently closes two parks

Maryland's Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor have closed for good

As of this Monday, Six Flags America in Maryland has closed its doors for good. The location had operated for over 50 years after first opening as a drive-through safari park.

“Thank you, Six Flags America fans, for 50 years of family fun. We will always cherish the memories made together,” Six Flags wrote on social media.

In addition to Six Flags America, Maryland’s Hurricane Harbor has also been shut down. The water park served as a sister attraction center to Six Flags America. These latest closures are part of Six Flags’ broader effort to restructure its assets.

“As part of our comprehensive review of our park portfolio, we have determined that Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor are not a strategic fit with the company’s long-term growth plan,” said Six Flags President & CEO Richard A. Zimmerman. “After reviewing a number of options, we believe that marketing the property for redevelopment will generate the highest value and return on investment. We anticipate strong interest in the property and will continue to strategically pursue portfolio optimization opportunities as we work to unlock the full value of our portfolio.”

“This was a difficult decision, and we recognize the impact it will have on our Six Flags America and Hurricane Harbor park associates and guests,” Zimmerman added.
