Sports on Max now supports Dolby Vision and Atmos

This marks the first time Dolby Vision has been implemented in a livestream environment

Just after Amazon upset some customers by quietly cutting Dolby Vision and Atmos support from some Prime Video plans, Warner Bros. Discovery has announced that Max (via the B/R Sports add-on) will, for the first time, be streaming live sports games with Dolby Vision.

The announcement was made right before Sunday’s NBA All Star Game, but Warner Bros. Discovery alludes that livestreaming with Dolby Vision will be available for its entire suite of sports programming. Audio aficionados who want to feel like they are part of the game are in luck as well, as Dolby Atmos will be supported for all games.

Samsung and Google’s answer to Dolby Atmos coming this year

As this will be the first instance of Dolby Vision being utilized for livestreamed HDR feeds, Dolby has commented that they utilizing intelligent, real-time handling of feeds so that the quality expected of Dolby Vision will be upheld. This includes optimizing shading so that bright areas aren’t oversaturated, and that darker areas are not muddled and devoid of detail.

“Max is the first streamer to offer live sports in Dolby Vision, putting customers in the center of the action with stunning visuals that come alive with lifelike colors, sharp contrast, and rich details,” reads the official announcement. “The Max update launches just ahead of NBA All Star 2024 so users can enjoy the coverage with enhanced imagery, alongside Dolby Atmos’ immersive sound.”
