Dolby Laboratories has announced the first exhibitor to adopt the company’s new combined Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos solution for existing and future theater locations. South Korea’s Megabox, who currently operates seven Dolby Cinema locations, is the first chain to sign on to the new solution, and will see several theaters upgraded with Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos next year. The new solution allows exhibitors to equip their own theaters with Dolby’s immersive video and audio technology.
Over 600 films have released or are confirmed to be in Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos, and Megabox has gone from opening its first Dolby Cinema in the country in 2020 to quickly expanding to seven locations in the last few years.
“With Megabox being the sole exhibitor partner of Dolby Cinema in Korea, Dolby has been a transformative partner in our rapid growth,” said Yongseok Nam, CEO of Megabox. “Through the introduction of this new Dolby Vision + Dolby Atmos offering, we aim not only to strengthen our partnership with Dolby, but also elevate the movie experience to more premium screens in South Korea.”

Dolby is making a push to gain more of the premium theater market share, expanding their reach beyond their Dolby Cinema-branded theaters.
Movie theaters that are designated as Dolby Cinema feature an environment designed by the company, including comfortable seating and, most importantly, Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos. Shortly ahead of this year’s Cinemacon, the company has announced a new plan to expand their presence in the cinema market, which will allow theater owners to add Dolby Vision to premium auditoriums that offer Dolby Atmos.
This new plan will give exhibitors more flexibility, as purchasing Dolby Vision projectors separately will cost much less than constructing an all new Dolby Cinema. Additionally, Dolby Cinemas are partnered exclusively with AMC in the US, so this new offering will help expand Dolby’s presence outside of a single chain.
“At Dolby, our passion is creating immersive entertainment experiences, and we can’t wait to bring the transformative power of Dolby Vision and Dolby Atmos to even more theaters around the world,” said Jed Harmsen, Head of Cinema and Group Entertainment at Dolby.
