The Skull Island: Reign of Kong ride at Universal Islands of Adventure is closed until further notice due to issues with the titular ape. How exactly it happened is unclear, but the giant King Kong animatronic was damaged, forcing the ride’s closure.
“During routine maintenance, the King Kong animatronic sustained damage and is undergoing repairs,” Universal shared in a statement to media. “We look forward to welcoming guests back once the work is complete.”
While it hasn’t been confirmed, signs point to the animatronic being damaged in a fire that occurred in late August. A fire broke out in an attraction that was closed to the public on August 27th, prompting a response by the Orlando Fire Department.
“Upon arrival, the fire was extinguished by Universal staff,” stated the department. “There were no injuries, nor extension of the fire. The attraction was closed when the incident occurred.”
Universal has not released a timeline for the attraction’s reopening.
