WATCH: Google Gemini demo fails twice in front of audience

"Let's see if the demo spirits are with us today..."

In tech, sometimes live demos don’t go as planned. Google’s Dave Citron seemed to go into his presentation of Gemini AI knowing this, quipping, “let’s see if the demo spirits are with us today” before two ill-fated attempts to showcase Gemini’s abilities. As another disclaimer, Citron told the audience, “all the demos we are doing today are live,” clarifying that there would be no trickery.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go as planned. Citron snapped a picture of a poster advertising the tour dates of singer Sabrina Carpenter before instructing Gemini, ,”check my calendar and see if I’m free when she’s coming to San Francisco this year.” After a few seconds of loading, Gemini’s software reset, with a notification saying “something went wrong, please try again.”

Try again he did, but with the same results. “Nope, uh-oh, looks like [the demo spirits] are not with us,” said Citron. After swapping out devices, Citron was able to get the result he was looking for, with Gemini delivering the desired information to much applause from the crowd. To be fair, other tasks asked of Gemini worked live without any issues, but the demo was another reminder that anything can happen live when it comes to developing tech.
