BenQ Projectors Bring to Life Interactive Sports Hall Running Wall at New Perot Museum of Nature and Science

MW860USTi Short-Throw Projectors Provide Larger-Than-Life Display in Revolutionary Sports Hall

IRVINE, Calif. — Dec. 18, 2012 — BenQ America Corp., an internationally renowned provider of digital lifestyle innovations and global DLP(R) projector leader, today announced its participation in the new world-class Perot Museum of Nature and Science in Dallas, which is relying on its MW860USTi short-throw projectors to bring to life its running wall exhibit in the museum’s Sports Hall. The 180,000-square-foot, $185 million museum, which opened Dec. 1, provides full interactive experiences to inspire scientific curiosity in visitors of all ages.

“Since our recent opening, the interactive running wall has become a popular exhibit at the museum,” said Justin Ashford, Director of Technology, Perot Museum of Nature and Science. “You can feel the excitement as families, especially kids, compare their speed alongside vivid projections of Dallas Cowboys’ Running Back Felix Jones, a full-size cheetah, a gigantic Tyrannosaurus Rex, and gymnast Emily Richardson. We are extremely happy with the quality of the exhibit and performance of the BenQ projectors. With this interactive display, we have created a truly immersive and memorable experience for our visitors, and it’s just one of the many highlights that the Perot Museum has to offer.”

The interactive running wall installation is the result of collaboration between BenQ, creative agency 900lbs, and systems integrator Delcom Group. Using the process of “image blending,” six BenQ MW860USTi projectors allow museum patrons to test their speed along a 50-foot track versus video projections of dinosaurs, animals, and professional athletes. To enable the seamless video projection alongside participants, each BenQ projector displays one part of the larger image to construct a continuous horizontal video display. In order for patrons to be able to see the image clearly, since the exhibit is in a brighter area within the Sports Hall, it was critical that the projectors used would be bright enough for the space. Offering 3,000 ANSI lumens and sustained color quality in short-throw settings, the versatile BenQ MW860USTi projector was selected to offer big performance in close proximity to the wall.

“This project was a unique, high-profile installation that required the projection of large moving images on a 55-foot wall from a very close distance,” said Joe Phillips, Director of Business Development for Delcom and integrator of the Perot Museum’s interactive running wall exhibit. “We chose the BenQ MW860USTi because no other short-throw projector provided comparable brightness and DLP quality at such a close range. We knew that the installation would experience heavy usage, so we needed a projector without any color decay from prolonged operation. The MW860USTi provided the connectivity and network termination needed to work with all the other components of the project.”

“BenQ is honored to have its projectors powering a state-of-the-art exhibit at the revolutionary Perot Museum,” said Lars Yoder, President of BenQ America Corp. “Delcom has integrated advanced image blending technology to deliver an impressive interactive exhibit, and we are delighted that our products are the conduit for projecting such a fun, entertaining, and educational experience for visitors of all ages.”
