UCSC’s Theater Arts Center Streams Live Video Production With Visionary Solutions’ Encoding

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. — March 5, 2012 — Visionary Solutions Inc. today announced that the University of California, Santa Cruz’s (UCSC) Theater Arts Department has selected Visionary Solutions’ IPTV encoders to stream audio and video signals during its production of The Thinning Veil, a modern adaptation of an ancient Greek drama. The production takes place in two different theaters simultaneously, connected by a live Internet stream.

“The success of the production relies upon finding a way to unify the two separate worlds in the play, represented by two different venues. We decided the best way to achieve this was to transport live streams over the Internet.” said Edward C. Warburton, associate professor of Theater Arts at UC Santa Cruz. “Visionary Solutions’ encoders provided us with significant ease of use that enabled us to utilize the technology early on in the multisite telematic performance, greatly enhancing the creative process for our cast and crew.”

At UCSC’s Theater Arts Center, live audio and video is projected onto six screens, three in each theater, to provide scenic elements during the production. Working alongside Canon GL2 camcorders and Amino 100 decoders, Visionary Solutions’ AVN200 encoders turn video from the camcorders into full-screen, full-resolution IP digital video streams in real time. A Dataton WATCHOUT digital media interface controls the lights, inserts green screen effects, and manipulates digitally enhanced images and media in real time.

The AVN200 was the perfect solution for UCSC’s theater department, which required cost-effective, high bit rate, standard-definition video distribution over an IP network. The video stream output can be viewed by an unlimited number of clients on a LAN or WAN with 25 fps PAL or 30 fps NTSC assured. The encoder provides an image resolution that is configurable from D1 (720×480 NTSC, 720×576 PAL) down to 352×240, and a video bit rate configurable from 1.5Mb/s to 7.5Mb/s.

“The UC Santa Cruz production of The Thinning Veil provides a unique multimedia experience for remote and live theater audiences,” said Mike Piper, vice president of sales and marketing at Visionary Solutions. “In this digital age, where technology plays such an important part of our everyday lives, UCSC is challenging the traditional concept of a one-venue production with its multisite, telematic performance. Visionary Solutions is thrilled to play the part of the ‘veil,’ as a constant, live Internet stream.”
