Taiwan company AU Optronics has announced plans to begin production of its own microLED displays by the end of this year. In its quarterly earnings report, the AU Optronics revealed it will be investing NT$700 million to build a production line in partnership with PlayNitride, a microLED company. PlayNitride has previously collaborated with TCL and Samsung.

A report by Taipei Times states that the first commercialized microLED product from the company will be for smartwatch displays, though AU Optronics noted that they will then move on to larger displays, as well as displays for vehicles. The company confirmed that their investment will go solely to next-gen display technology, with no plans to produce or commercialize current-gen display types such as LCD panels.
