Huawei’s NearLink is 6 times faster than Bluetooth, more efficient

Over 300 companies are on board, though NearLink may not hit US shores anytime soon

Huawei has announced the launch of NearLink, the company’s new short-range wireless connection standard said to combine the benefits of Wi-Fi and Bluetooth. The new technology purportedly offers exponentially faster speeds, more power efficiency, and reduced delay over Bluetooth.

“Compared with traditional wireless connections, Huawei Nearlink has the advantages of 60% lower power consumption, 6 times higher speed, 1/30 delay, and 10 times higher number of network connections,” reads Huawei’s announcement.

NearLink will be integrated into upcoming consumer electronics, smart homes, electric vehicles, and industrial smart manufacturing, says Huawei. The new standard will be present in Huawei’s HarmonyOS 4 operating system as well, fully integrating the new platform into all smart Huawei products.

The company reports that “more than 300 leading enterprises and institutions” are already committed to utilize NearLink, though, as noted by TechRadar, the only non-Chinese companies listed so far are Mediatek from Taiwan and St. Gobain from France. Huawei is still blacklisted by US sanctions, meaning American-made devices are unlikely to have NearLink compatibility anytime soon.
