LG begins production of 17-inch foldable OLED panel with increased lifespan

LG, a major OLED panel supplier, has announced the successful production of a 17-inch foldable OLED panel, which the company deems “groundbreaking.”

“LG Display’s 17-inch Foldable OLED panel features a Tandem OLED structure previously applied to automotive displays, with a dramatically increased lifespan suitable for IT devices. An industry first in 2019, LG Display’s Tandem OLED embodies its groundbreaking two-stack OLED technology, which adds an extra organic emitting layer to deliver brighter screens while effectively dispersing energy across OLED components for optimal stability and longer lifespans. The longevity of the panel is well-suited to IT devices which typically have longer usage times such as laptops, monitors, and tablets,” reads the company’s announcement.

The 2560×1920 screen features an in-folding design, meaning the 17-inch panel essentially folds into a 12.3-inch keyboardless “laptop.” Folding turns the display’s 4:3 aspect ratio into 3:2, and the panel takes advantage of LG’s “tandem OLED” technology to double up on layers for an increased lifespan. LG also states the panel “integrates a specialized material” that minimizes creasing along the fold of the screen, making the display appear seamless.

“We will continue to intensify our competitiveness in the OLED business for the IT industry, expanding our orders based on differentiated technologies such as Tandem OLED and unique folding structures,” commented a representative for LG.
