Solid-state micro-speakers developed to replace legacy coil drivers

The Cypress speaker is said to maintain faithful sound reproduction while greatly boosting low-end

California’s xMEMS Labs has developed a silicon solid-state micro-speaker that is intended to replace the coil-based drivers in personal audio products. While Creative has already used the technology in their TWS earbuds, xMEMS is now utilizing the technology in the Cypress speaker to boost low-end.

In what xMEMS calls an industry first, Cypress speakers are able to achieve >140dB low frequency sound pressure level (SPL), intending them as a faithful and efficient replacement for coil drivers. The new solid-state speakers are positioned as providing active noise cancelling earbuds with faithful sound reproduction and greatly boosted low-end frequencies.

“By shifting to a sound from ultrasound principle, the xMEMS Cypress micro speaker can now officially replace traditional coil-and-magnet speakers in active noise canceling earbuds,” claims Mike Housholder, Vice President, Marketing & Business Development for xMEMS. “Cypress maintains all of the benefits of xMEMS’ existing speakers, while being 40x louder in low frequencies, achieving a key requirement for ANC earbuds.”
