WATCH: Disney Imagineers demo HoloTile Floor

At this weekend's D23 expo, Imagineers gave fans an up-close look at how HoloTile works

At the D23 fan event that took place over this weekend, Disney Imagineering gave fans a closer looks at its new HoloTile Floor, the world’s first omni-directional treadmill floor. Designed for VR and other immersive experiences, HoloTile allows people to walk in any direction at their desired speed without moving anywhere at all.

Newly showcased in videos captured by attendees, Imagineers show exactly how each tile’s design is carefully engineered to allow the technology to work. In another first, a demonstration of the tiles being controlled remotely allows an object (in this case, a chair) to be precisely moved around the floor. This means, in VR applications, seated users can be remotely moved around in space without needing to move a muscle.
