Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel will be repurposed as office space

The building that once housed the immersive Star Wars experience has been vacant for nearly two years

We’ve followed the dramatic story of the rise and fall of Disney’s Star Wars Galactic Starcruiser hotel, and now we know the epilogue. The immersive Star Wars hotel made its final voyage in late September after operating costs proved to be too much to bear, and since then, the building has stood empty. The Wrap has reported that originally, it was thought that the building would be used for “a several-hour-long dinner theater-type experience” that would utilize several main areas of the hotel, but it turns out that the building’s ultimate purpose “won’t be accessible to guests at all.”

“According to several sources, including an individual close to the company, the building that formerly housed the immersive adventure (located near Disney’s Hollywood Studios at Walt Disney World) is being converted into offices for Walt Disney Imagineering, the secretive arm of the company responsible for theme park attractions, retail locations and cruise ships,” reports The Wrap.

The report goes on to say that Walt Disney Imagineering will be using these offices for “several expansion projects” across Walt Disney World across several parks. The building’s repurposing for office space means that Disney guests won’t be seeing any more interactive overnight stays in the foreseeable future.

The following was originally published May 19, 2023:

It’s official, Disney’s Galactic Starcruiser will be making its final voyage September 28-30. The interactive Star Wars-themed hotel experience was met with much fanfare when it opened just over a year ago on March 1, 2022, but it has reportedly struggled to bring in the revenue needed to justify it. Now, Disney has announced that the entire venture will be closing.

“The final voyage for Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser will take place September 28-30, 2023,” reads an update on Disney’s website. “We are so proud of all of the Cast Members and Imagineers who brought Star Wars: Galactic Starcruiser to life and look forward to delivering an excellent experience for Guests during the remaining voyages over the coming months. Thank you to our Guests and fans for making this experience so special.”

With only 100 available rooms, and the price for two adults being just under $5,000, industry experts speculate that even if the hotel’s business fared better than it apparently has, it wouldn’t be enough to justify the cost of running such an operation.

Disney says that guests that have booked a voyage on or after September 30 will be contacted to try and work out an alternative arrangement. In the meantime, new bookings have been paused, and will reopen May 26 for those who will find it an irresistible chance to be part of an historic experiment.
