
LOS ANGELES — September 8, 2026 — Arch Platform Technologies today announced Fallback Instances, a new intelligent provisioning capability designed to improve the availability and resiliency of high-performance cloud workstations running on Amazon Web Services (AWS).
As demand for GPU and high-performance compute capacity continues to grow, organizations can encounter situations where a preferred Amazon EC2 instance type is temporarily unavailable in a particular location. For production teams that depend on cloud workstations, capacity constraints can delay workstation launches and interrupt time-sensitive creative, engineering, and development workflows.
Fallback Instances allows Arch administrators to define an ordered hierarchy of approved EC2 instance configurations for each workstation group or workflow. If the preferred instance type is unavailable, Arch automatically moves to the next approved option and continues through the hierarchy until suitable capacity is found.
The process happens in seconds and requires no intervention or reconfiguration by the end user.

Fallback Instances builds on Arch’s existing automated Availability Zone provisioning, which helps locate available capacity across AWS Availability Zones. Together, the capabilities give Arch more paths to successfully provision a workstation: Availability Zone automation determines where an approved workstation can run, while Fallback Instances determines what approved EC2 configuration can be used when preferred capacity is unavailable.
This approach is particularly valuable for organizations operating large GPU workstation environments or supporting production peaks, distributed teams, live and time-sensitive media workflows, game development, visual effects, animation, design, and other compute-intensive workloads.
“Cloud infrastructure gives organizations tremendous flexibility, but that doesn’t mean every specific instance configuration will always be available exactly when and where it is requested,” Churchward added. “Our goal is to design around that reality so infrastructure constraints have as little impact on the person trying to get their work done as possible.”
Fallback Instances is rolling out now as part of the Arch Platform.
